Canton- We give thanks for the 82 years of the blessed life of Barbara “Bob” Smith Henson, who went home to be with her Lord on Friday, December 29, 2017 surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Henson was born August 27, 1935 in Haywood County to the late Claude Smith and the late Inez Inman Smith. She grew up on Little East Fork and Bob often shared with family and friends the treasured memories she held of growing up in this close community.   Mrs. Henson was a wonderful wife, who together she and her devoted husband, David Wayne Henson shared 60 years of a blessed marriage. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and a dear sister who proudly loved her family with all of her heart and soul and Bob also touched the lives of many as a dear and special friend.

A dedicated homemaker, she was also an exceptional cook and her fried cornbread and delicious fried fish were indeed favorites of everyone!  Bob enjoyed shopping and she could often be found at local flea markets and yard sales, always finding an amazing treasure. Her strong faith was an important part of her life and she was a faithful member of Bible Baptist Church in Waynesville. Her grandchildren were the love of her life and nothing brought her more joy than to listen to her grandchildren sing and raise their voices in praise. Barbara “Bob” Smith Henson is a lady that will remain a part of each of us forever and we should each try to follow her example of always being a kind and giving person and treating those around us each day with love and compassion.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Cora Mae Smith and Mary Alice Smith and a brother, David Smith.

Bob’s memory will continue to live in the hearts of her surviving family; her husband, David Wayne Henson of Canton, a daughter, Becky Carver and her husband,  Kevin Batson of Canton; her sons, Gary Henson and his wife, Kim Henson of Canton, Larry Henson and and his wife, Alicia Henson of Bethel and Roger Henson and his wife, Debora Henson of Canton; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and 1 little blessing soon to arrive into this world; sisters, Gin Mathis of Waynesville and Vickie Raby of Canton; brothers, Mike Smith of Canton and Harry Smith of Waynesville and also Mrs. Henson’s church family that she loved dearly.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, December 31, 2017 at Bible Baptist Church in Waynesville.  Pastors Dwight Banks, Aaron Henson and Roger Henson will be officiating. Burial will be in Crawford / Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde with grandsons serving as pallbearers.  The family will be receiving and welcoming friends at the church from 12:30 until 2:00 pm prior to the funeral service.

Memorials may be made in Mrs. Henson’s memory to Bible Baptist Church, 203 Bible Baptist Drive, Waynesville, NC 28786.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Henson family.

Condolences from family and friends
