Canton- Betty Lou Shipman Lane, a dear and special lady, blessed with 83 years of a wonderful life, was carried home by the angels on Friday, April 27, 2018.

Mrs. Lane was born February 6, 1935 to the late Vinson Shipman and the late Bonnie Green Shipman. She had made her home in Haywood County all of her life and was employed with IWANNA for several years. Betty had also resided at Camp Daniel Boone where she assisted with the operation of the camp and helped care for the many campers. She was loved dearly by the scout campers and became just like another mother to many of them. Her kindness and caring way will forever be remembered by the children whose lives she has touched. Mrs. Lane’s faith was an important part of her life and she was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.  Betty loved to travel and especially enjoyed the trips with her husband, Bill to attend his military reunions.  She was a talented pianist and also a lady who truly loved being outdoors. The beach was one of her favorite places to visit and she also enjoyed camping.  We give thanks for the life of Betty Shipman Lane.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Gudger Shipman and her sisters, Ellen Stroupe and Christine Shipman.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband, William D. Lane of Canton; her son, Gene Pearson and his wife Jeanette Pearson of Mills River; her stepdaughters, Teresa Goodson and her husband, David Goodson of Canton and Diane Lane of Canton; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and many friends.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at Bethel Baptist Church. Reverend Roy Kilby and Reverend Riley Covin will be officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in Longs Community Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to The Boy Scouts of America, 333 W. Haywood Street, Asheville, NC 28801.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Lane family and words of comfort may be shared at www.crawfordray.com

My condolences to Bill, Gene and his family and all other family members that have to continu with the memories of dear Betty. I will remember mama Mort dearly. She was my American mom during the summers I spent at Camp Daniel Boone. She provided a very welcome home for me when I was not working at the water front or other program areas. All the hospitality I experienced on my time off. She was always there to take me under her wings on weekends or after camp season ended and when I still had some time left before going home. I will never forget the times at the lake or going to all those other places like the Garret house or unto the hills. In later years I was proud to introduce my wife and later my oldest daughter to her and show her the Dutch boy did well. It will be very different to return to the head waters of the little east fork, camp and Pearson place, knowing Betty is no longer with us. So last September was our final farewell. Rest in peace dear 'mom'.

Betty was indeed a special lady and I'll never forget growing up spending summers fishing and camping at Daniel Boone. She was definitely like a second "mom" to me. I'll always remember her infectious laugh when either she or someone else told a great joke. My condolences go out to Gene, Bill and the rest of her family. Your loss is truly Heaven's gain and I'm sure she is smiling down on all of us.
