I got to know Bobby well in the one week we roomed together at the 1958 Coaches All-Star game in August of 1958...We were constant companions for that week as we were preparing to take on the East NC All-Stars headed up by Roman Gabriel......Of course the week was one of hard work and getting indoctrinated to Coach Boyd Allen's practices and coaching....Bobby, of course, was Coach Allen's QB at Canton, and the game was billed to be a dual between Ray Farris of Charlotte and Roman Gabriel of Wilmington.......Bobby was of great assistance getting us all ready, including Ray Farris his competition......he showed magnificent selflessness in assisting everyone....I was very proud to have made a new mountain friend and football player of Bobby's calibre and great positive attitude ....Oh, we won the game in the closing minutes as I got open in the end zone on a broken play to catch the winning TD pass.......from Ray Farris......to beat the Roman Gabriel-led East Squad....I always wanted it to be Bobby tossing that pass because he deserved so much more recognition than he received. I want to pass along my story from 60 years ago to the family, and to also wish you many blessings and fond memories of Bobby....He made a great impression on me and I have always considered him a great friend even though we were room mates for only a week....It was a large memorable time in our lives..I am so sorry that I did not get to visit with him since that time 60 years ago....May God Bless you all and remember Bobby made a lasting positive impression on me as we were closest friends that week...My deepest sympathies to each of you in his family...Sincerely, Gene
