A Full and Blessed Life

Canton- Life may often be too short, so live your life to the fullest … every second of your life is a treasure. These words are fitting to describe the life of Bruce Dale Edwards, who departed this earthly life on Sunday May 27, 2018 and entered into a place of eternal peace and everlasting life.

In the summer season of July 1, 1963, Bill and Barbara McKinney Edwards were blessed with the birth of their son, Bruce who has brought into their lives a bounty of blessings each and every day. He never met a stranger and laughter and joy surrounded him wherever he went. He was indeed a jokester and nothing pleased him more than to bring a little happiness into the lives of those around him. Bruce had a kind and caring heart, often taking time to check on several elderly citizens that lived in the community and who simply adored him.  His life was constantly filled with adventure, frequently flying in small private airplanes, traveling internationally to places most people only dream about and he had no fear of trying any new endeavors. Bruce held a great interest in history and his historical knowledge was most amazing to everyone who knew him. Fly fishing and canoeing in his favorite rivers and streams, trips to the ocean and hours spent searching for arrowheads and Native American artifacts among the mountains were all happy memories throughout his life.  The time he spent with his family and just heading home to his “Bruce Lodge” with his dog,“ Buck” were  the times he cherished the most.  Bruce had been employed with IMOCO for several years and was also a master carpenter having been employed most recently with Clark and Leatherwood Inc. for almost 20 dedicated years.  Even as a little boy Bruce showed signs of his great imagination and his creative eye for building by constructing his own scooter, with a tomato crate, several used pieces of lumber and his sister’s roller skates -  he had already mastered the skill of using his daddy’s tools!   A man with a heart of gold, a man slow to anger and a man who never held a grudge, Bruce Dale Edwards will never be forgotten. A wonderful son and a loved brother, we give thanks for the 54 years we were blessed to have him in our lives.  Bruce was also a talented artist and one only has to look at his beautiful painting which is placed on a wall in the home of his parents to feel Bruce’s kind spirit, and the love within his heart.  His family titled it “The Clearing” a place of beauty, a place of serenity and a place of solace. Today we all have peace knowing that Bruce has found this special heavenly place.

Surviving are his parents, Bill Edwards and Barbara McKinney Edwards of Canton; his brothers and sisters,  Brenda Gaddis and her husband, Joe of Canton; Boyd Edwards and his wife, Susan of Canton , Beth Edwards and her husband, Jerry of Canton and Brad Edwards and his wife, Sherry of Leicester;  a loving companion, Nancy Crawford of Waynesville; several nieces and nephews and also Bruce’s Jack Russell dog, “Buck”  who has been his faithful best friend for 14 years.

A funeral service to celebrate Bruce’s life will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, June 1, 2018 in the chapel of Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Reverend Clay Morgan and Reverend Jodi Hopkins will be officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 12:30 until 2:00 pm prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in Crawford / Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde.

Memorials may be made in Bruce’s memory to Sarge’s  Animal Rescue Foundation, 256 Industrial Park Drive, Waynesville NC 28786, St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Backpacks of Love Program, PO Box 947, Canton, NC 28716 or The Community Kitchen, PO Box 513, Canton, NC 28716.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Edwards family.

I am truly heartbroken to learn of Bruce's passing. He was a great friend to me when I needed one the most. I will miss his phone calls and joke telling. He always made me laugh. Bruce was blessed with a wonderful caring family and I'd be glad to do anything for you if needed. Unfortunately, I have prior plans to be in California on Friday or I would be at his service. Please know that I will be with you all in spirit. I will always remember his keen sense of humor and the sound of his voice. Peace to you all!

Barbara, Bill, Beth, Buck and All the Edwards, I am so very sad hearing about Bruce. You know Bruce and I have been buds since the day I moved back to Canton. He saw the moving mess, stopped out front and walked right in! I went with him to pick up Buck who was so small he rode back to town curled up under my chin and I have been his other mommy ever since (except if I should touch the truck!) While you will probably not not see me at the service, please know I will totally be there in spirit with all of you to honor Bruce. I know I would just cry all over everybody and is not good for anybody. I am more than happy to make a contribution to Sarge's in Bruce's memory and in honor of his best bud, Buck. Karen

Ms. Barbara and Mr. Bill I wanted to let you know that it broke my heart to hear of your loss. Bruce was a special friend to me. When I needed someone to tell my troubles too I could call him crying and before I got off the phone I was laughing he was such a dear heart. Oh my visits to Canton from South Carolina I always had to go to the Bruce Lodge to see Bruce and Buck. I think he had a sixth sense about those things because I would know sooner pull up in the driveway next door than he was calling me to tell me to come on over. We always had a good time... I loved him dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the rest of the family… I know how much you loved him and I know he will be missed. Give Buck a kiss for me and I love you all
