Canton- David Max Burnette, age 84, passed away peacefully during the morning hours of Monday, March 19, 2018.

Mr. Burnette was born September 11, 1933, to the late Frank Burnette and the late Thelma Chambers Mashburn. He had made his home in Haywood County among the mountains that he loved and where he was born and lived all of his life.  He was a faithful employee of Champion International retiring with 52 years of dedicated service and was also a Champion Oldtimer. Mr. Burnette was a member of Lake Junaluska Baptist Church and his quiet strong spiritual beliefs were evident in the way that he lived his life each day and he was indeed an example for each of us to follow.  Max loved to travel and together he and his beloved wife Doris shared happy memories of taking their camper on fun excursions to the beach and going on trips out West.  Max considered his wife and family to be the center of his life and he was truly devoted to each one of them. David Max Burnette was a man who lived his life as a Christian and he would ask of us to never forget to tell your family how much you love them each and every day.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael David Burnette; his brothers, Hugh and Curtis Burnette and a sister, Joann Ross.

Surviving is the love of his life for 38 years, Doris Teague Burnette of Canton; his daughters, Marsha Drye and her husband, Duane Drye of Canton, Jan Scroggs and her husband, John Scroggs of Asheville, LuAnne Allen and her husband, Larry Allen of Canton, Cindy Reagan and her husband, Wally Reagan of Canton and Rhonda Warren and her husband, Richard Warren of Canton; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Burnette of Kernersville, NC;  14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Judy Williams and her husband, Warren Williams of Weaverville; a brother, Ralph Burnette and his wife, Roxie Burnette of Canton and many friends.

The funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm Thursday, March 22, 2018, in the chapel of Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Rev. Dr. Roy Kilby will be officiating. Burial will be in Crawford / Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral service.

I am so grieved at the passing of this quiet, Christian man. His life and character were such a good example of how we all should be. My husband, Charles, and I extend our deepest sympathy to Doris, and all the family, for the loss of this man and all he was to them. Heaven is certainly his home now, and we shall be with him when we are called there by our Lord. Until that time, we will remember this loving and gentle man while he was with us. Prayers for all the family until then.
