Canton- Debra “Debbie” Cole Mills, age 60, a true angel on this earth, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2019 and entered into her heavenly eternal home.

Debbie was born August 14, 1958 in Haywood County and had made her home in Canton all of her life.  She was a blessing to her family each day and she brought great joy to her parents, Dan, and Norma Cole. Debbie grew into a kind and caring young lady and was loved by everyone. She was a 1976 graduate of Pisgah High School and continued her education at Haywood Community College receiving an Associate Degree.  Her classmates still recall her genuine heart and how she was a friend to everyone –always.  She met and married the love of her life and her best friend, Larry Mills and they have shared 42 years of a close and committed life together and the greatest blessing in their lives have been their two amazing children, Calisa and Chris.  Debbie’s life was devoted to her family and making a wonderful home for her children. She was an avid reader, enjoyed spending time in her garden and she was also an excellent cook. She loved animals and her affection for her dogs was quite evident to anyone who knew her.  She was a dedicated University of North Carolina sports fan, especially Carolina Basketball and we can never forget her allegiance to Dale Earnhardt, Jr. when racing was being discussed. She loved going to Lake Douglas, fishing every chance she had and also spending summer vacations at the beach. Debbie was of the Baptist faith and attended Biltmore Church in Asheville.   She loved children and she volunteered and gave of her time in the Haywood County School System since 1984. As an employee with Meadowbrook Elementary School, Debbie opened her arms and her heart to children who will never ever forget her. She has made a difference in this world by reaching out to the children who needed her and in their words, “She always made everything okay.”  Our hearts are broken as we feel the emptiness without Debbie, but let us remember the joy that she brought to each and every one of us.  Let us remember her courage and the lessons in life that she taught us and our children. Let us remember her beautiful smile and know that a part of her lives on in each of us forever.  In memory of Debbie, tell someone today that you care about them, give someone a loving hug or just be there for someone who needs a friend.  Debbie would smile about that.

Surviving are her husband, Larry Mills of Canton; her children, Calisa Hughes and Brad of Waynesville, Chris Mills  and Jessica of Stanford, Kentucky; her parents, Dan and Norma Case Cole of Canton; a sister, Pam Kaller of Canton;  Angela Duckett who was loved like her own; Peyton, Makinley and all the family children were grandchildren to her;  several special brothers and sisters-in-law ; her dog, “Lucy” and a multitude of dear friends who loved Debbie dearly.

A celebration of life service to honor and remember Debbie will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service.  Pastor Nicole Jones will be officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 12:00 noon until 2:00 pm prior to the service. Interment will be in Crawford / Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde.

Memorials may be made in Debbie’s memory to SARGE’S Animal Rescue Foundation, 256 Industrial Park Drive, Canton, NC 28786; children’s Backpacks of Love Program,  St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 99 Academy Street , Canton, NC 28716; or to Meadowbrook Elementary School's Book Room, 85 Morning Star Rd, Canton, NC 28716.

Debbie was the kindest person I have ever known. Her courage in the face of any difficult situation was less about herself, and more about sheltering others from pain and sadness. The unconditional love in her beautiful eyes, smile, and heart were gifts to be treasured forever. All my love to Larry, Calisa, Brad, Chris and Jessica during this time of unmeasurable loss. God’s speed precious friend Debbie. I love you to the moon and back. “What made her beautiful was her love, courage, and audacity to believe: no matter the darkness around her. Light ran wild within her, and that was the way she came alive, and it showed up in everything.” ~ morgan harper nichols ~
