Wonderful Husband, Father and Friend

Canton - As the warm beautiful sunlight shown down across the mountains on Friday, August 31, 2018, Douglas “Doug” James Haney, age 71, entered into his eternal heavenly home.

Doug was born July 16, 1947 to the late James “Junior” Andrew Haney and the late Rhea Kessler Haney.  He grew up in the mountains that he loved with a wonderful family and was blessed with two brothers and one sister. Doug was well known throughout the community and is someone that will always be remembered for his kind and caring spirit. He was an employee of Champion International / Evergreen Packaging with 48 years of dedicated service.  Doug’s faith was an important part of his life. He was a devoted member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and loved his church family deeply.  He served as a church Deacon, was a member of the North Carolina Baptist Men’s Association and often gave of his time to travel on several mission trips which included Thailand and Alaska. It is certain that Doug helped to change the lives of many with his strong faith and his loving heart. He was also very involved with the Baptist Men’s Disaster Relief Program that reached out to help those who were in need and had experienced a time of trauma in their lives. With his kind smile, his genuine calmness and his easy going personality, Doug always made things seem perfectly okay in any situation.  His life was a blessing and together he and his loving wife, Sue always had a special way of opening their hearts and their home to family and friends and making those around them feel loved.  Doug was an avid hunter and fisherman and he also held in his heart precious memories of the special and happy times that he shared with his family at Lake Murray, South Carolina.  In describing the life of Douglas “Doug” James Haney, one must say that he was a man that loved his family, a man who gave his life to Christ and a man who truly taught us the meaning of courage. Doug was an example for each of us to follow. Well done thy faithful servant, you shall be forever missed.

Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 53 years and the love of his life, Sue Penley Haney of Canton; his sons, Ken Haney of Canton and Kevin Haney and his wife, Gina Haney of Hartsville, South Carolina; his grandsons, Zachary and Michael of Hartsville, South Carolina; his sister, Mary Grace Arrowood and Joe of Canton; his brothers, Jim Haney and Betsy of Glenwood, Maryland and Charlie Haney of Mooresville, North Carolina.

A memorial service to celebrate Doug’s life will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Pastor Jeff King and Pastor Greg Cope will be officiating.  The family will be receiving friends at the church from 1:00 until 3:00 pm prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to Haywood County Hospice and Palliative Care, 127 Sunset Ridge Road, Clyde, NC 28721.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Haney family.

I have so many fond memories of Doug. What a sweet spirit he had, one that could only come from the presence of the Lord in his life.
