A Kind and Loving Lady

Clyde – We give thanks for the life of Florence Leak Howell, age 88, who went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

Mrs. Howell was born November 23, 1929 to the late Clinton Leak and the late Mattie Roberts Leak. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas David Howell, Jr.; a son, David O’Neal Howell; a brother, Elbert Leak and a sister, Mary Rather.

Florence was born in Tarboro, NC and educated in the Edgecombe County School System. She retired from Canton Laundry / Plus Linen Service with over 20 years of dedicated service.  Mrs. Howell had faithfully attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Canton until her health declined but was always there in spirit.  Her warm and giving nature was best enjoyed when serving at the church with the hospitality committee. Everyone always enjoyed  “Ms. Florence’s cornbread and sweet potatoes”-  they were indeed delicious favorites! The eldest of four children, she was lovingly known to her family as “Boot,” and although Florence was the oldest, she was the tiniest, standing at 4 feet 10 inches.  Florence truly exuded a kind and loving spirit at all times. She will be missed physically, but will always be remembered.

Survivors include her two daughters, Miranda Manuel (Roosevelt), and Tracey Howell, both of Clyde; nine grandchildren, La Trasha, Timothy, Candylee, David, Clinton, Jovan, Jennifer, William, and Cody; ten great-grandchildren;  a brother, William Leak (Marguerite) of Baltimore, MD;  a special niece, Diane Rose of Baltimore, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, November 12, 2018 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.  Reverend O.T. Tomes will be officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Howell family and words of comfort may be shared at www.CrawfordRay.com

I'm so very sorry to hear that Florence has passed. She was a precious lady and I loved her. Her cornbread and sweet potatoes were indeed wonderful, but don't forget the biscuits! She fed me breakfast at work for 6 years. Please accept my heartfelt condolences to the family. Godspeed Flossie!
