Horace M. Green
A Caring Man
Waynesville - Horace M. Green passed away peacefully after a brief illness at Silver Bluff Retirement Village in Canton, September 29, 2018, at the age of 94.
He was the son of the late William McKinley Green, Sr. and the late Fina Simmons Green of Lake Logan. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Gibson Green; and brothers, William Green, Jr., Tilman Green, Roy Green, and Bobby Green.
Horace was born June 1, 1924, in Burke County, NC. He graduated from Bethel High School in 1941 and immediately joined and served in the United States Navy from 1941 to 1945 as a Chief Petty Officer (ACOM) Aviation Chief Ordinance Manager. After his service in the Navy, he worked for Haywood Builders Supply for 42 years until his retirement as a General Manager in 1988.
In his retirement, Horace was always quick to help his friends and his family by utilizing his knowledge of home building and almost any kind of odd job, to give advice and physically get involved. He loved receiving visitors and enjoyed his home at Lake Junaluska. Horace was much loved by family and friends. His caring and loving personality will be very much missed.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Josephine Paxton Green; daughters, Rose Earnest and her husband, Dr. Robert Earnest, of Waynesville, and Margaret Green Koch of Maryland; grandchildren, Elizabeth E. Camp and her husband, Casey Camp, Mary Catherine Earnest and Steven R. Redmond, and Elise and Kris Koch of Maryland; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth M. Hudson of Waynesville, and Gabriel DeAngelis of Maryland. Also, surviving are step-sons, John A. Wood of Canton, James L. Wood of Clyde, and David O. Wood and his wife, Debra, of Greensboro; step-grandchildren, Sarah Wood, Matthew Harrington, and Stephanie H. Fleming; and step-great-grandchildren, Ella and Coleman Fleming of Rutherfordton, and Matt Harrington of Asheville.
A private graveside entombment service will be held at The Horizon at Crawford / Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde.
Memorials can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, as he was a great supporter. He loved children and supported them faithfully.
