Howard "Brother" Smathers
Loved His Family
Canton – Howard “Brother” Leroy Smathers, age 75, passed away Saturday, September 1, 2018 at John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville.
A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, Mr. Smathers was born June 28, 1943 to the late Turner Smathers and the late Rhoda Inez Clontz Smathers.
He was employed with Champion International and retired after 35 years of dedicated service and was also a Champion Oldtimer. His true passion was spending time outdoors, and his other joys of riding his motorcycle, hunting among the mountains that he loved, fishing in his favorite mountain streams, and also spending special time camping at Mt. Pisgah with his family were all treasured memories. His greatest love was his family and he held great pride and joy for each one of them. Brother was indeed a “Special Papaw “ and all of his grandchildren will forever cherish the wonderful memories that they have shared with him all throughout their lives. Brother will be remembered as a true and straight spoken person and someone with a caring and genuine heart. “A man who would always help or do anything for anyone who might need a helping hand” was a true description of Brother. He was of the Baptist faith. Brother has touched the lives of many and he will be deeply missed.
Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, George Ann Brown Smathers; his children, Shawn Smathers and his wife, Daiquiri, of Canton, Leigh-Anna Patterson and her husband, Earnest, of Canton, and Michelle Noland and her fiancé, Derek Willis, of Waynesville; his grandchildren, Spencer Noland and Dana, Josh Noland and Baley, Cadden Smathers, Celina Whitener, and Skylar Ann Smathers; a great-grandson, Clayton Noland; his sisters, Artie Ruth Smathers and her husband, “Plucky,” of Canton, and Lynn Shelton and her husband, Tony, of Waynesville; special nieces, Anna Carol Smathers, Jeorgeann Clontz, and Chesnie Long; as well as many dear friends.
In honoring of Brother’s wishes, there will be no funeral services held.
