A Caring and Giving Lady

Photo of Mary Catherine Simons - 1960-2019

Mary Catherine Wright Simons, age 58, a truly loving and giving lady, entered into her eternal heavenly home, Friday, March 1, 2019.

Mary Catherine was born during the beautiful fall season of November 27, 1960. She was a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was the daughter of the late Mary Alexander Wright Brown and Richard G. Wright. For the past five years, Mary Catherine had chosen to make her home in Waynesville among the mountains that she loved dearly.  With her gentle spirit and her loving heart, she truly touched the lives of many during her lifetime.  Mary Catherine was a dedicated and active member of Grace Church in the Mountains, where she was a member of The Vestry, served as Vice President of Daughters of the King, and was also a volunteer with The Grace Church Food Pantry.  Something that Mary Catherine held close to her heart was being a part of Eucharist Outreach for her church, visiting those unable to attend and partake of Holy Communion. This indeed was a blessing to so many and also a blessing in Mary Catherine’s life.  She was a wonderful cook and she often graciously gave of her time and her cooking talents by volunteering at the Open Door in Waynesville. Mary Catherine always seemed to be able to make someone’s day a little brighter with her beautiful smile and caring words.  She often enjoyed spending time working in her vegetable garden and also among her flowers. Mary Catherine will forever be remembered as a loving mother and a caring friend. We should each try to follow her example of bringing joy into the lives of others and believing in the goodness of people.

Left to cherish her memory in addition to her father, are her daughters, Madeline Rose Rathbone and her husband, Dakota Rathbone of Canton and Catherine Ellis Simons of Boulder, Colorado; her sisters, Rebecca Roth of Traverse City, Michigan and Laura (Michael) Singer of St. Louis, Missouri; nieces and nephews, Kelsey (Brad) Morse, Alexander Cannon, Sally (Hilton) deTar, and Paul Roth; and her former husband and the father of her children, Charles R. Simons, Jr. of Saint Simons, Georgia.

A service of remembrance to honor the life of Mary Catherine will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Grace Church in the Mountains in Waynesville. The Reverend Joslyn Ogden Shaefer will be officiating.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Simons family.

I went to the Open Door kitchen Today to volunteer, and was looking for Cathy’s sweet face. I did not know she had passed away, and my heart is broken today. She was such a wonderful lady, and I will always remember her sense of humor. We serve many meals together and her antics always kept me laughing. God truly has another angel.
