Canton- Mary Sue Skidmore Tipton, age 68, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 14, 2018. She was surrounded by her loved ones.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Olie Joe Skidmore, Sr. and the late Lillian Dale Thomas Skidmore. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Riley Skidmore , Lester Skidmore, Rev. O.J. Skidmore and Jack Skidmore; three sisters, Peggy Childers, Eula Mae Gibson and her twin sister, Betty Lou Skidmore.

Mary was born June 13, 1950 and grew up on Chestnut Mountain in Canton, NC.  She had been employed at Dayco for many years and retired to go back to school to earn a degree in Machine Technology from Haywood Community College.  After receiving her degree she worked at Continental Teves, Inc. for several years.  Mary was first and foremost a Mama. She loved her kids and grandkids very much and “spoiled all of them rotten.” She enjoyed watching all of her grandchildren play ball and if anyone knew her at all – she was always on a ball field or in a gymnasium watching and supporting her kids. Mary will always be remembered as a strong determined hard worker and fighter in all that she has done.

Surviving are her husband of 25 years, Robert Tipton; a son, Randy Woods and Apryl; her daughters, Amy Deaver and her husband, Victor and Angie Tipton and her husband, Bertrand;  five grandsons, Josh Noland, Gage Deaver, Kohen Frady, and Alexandre and Tristin Pollono;   three granddaughters, Baley Noland, Lani Woods and Emma Deaver; a great-grandson, Clayton Noland;  four sisters, Bertha Fish and Jimmy, Patsy Pridmore and Ralph, Carolyn Marler and Maggie Hembree; three brothers, Luther Skidmore and Patricia, Gene Skidmore and Diane, and James Skidmore and Revonda; also numerous nieces and nephews that she loved very much.

A private memorial service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the Tipton family ask that memorials be made in Mary’s memory to Crawford / Ray Funeral Home, 1 North Main Street, Canton NC 28716.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Tipton family.

Dear Family: My heart and sympathy goes out to all. I didn't know Mary but I do know her sister Patsy and OJ as I went to school with both of them and love them both. May God grant you peace and strength as you travel this road of heartache and sorrow. But remember she is with the Lord now and all of her troubles and trials are over. God bless each of you as you go through your life.

Amy and Randy, so sorry about your mother. I have great memories playing basketball with her. Then watching her support you both in sports. You and your families will be in my prayers.

To the Family, Mary Jane and I began school together in the first grade in Mrs. Louise Rikard's room at Pennsylvania Avenue School. I remember that she was a very fast runner as we played "being horses" on the playground at Penn. Ave. That was 50 years ago. . . Over the years, I lost track of her, but I always remembered her childhood home as I passed up and down Canton Hill. Through the years I have wondered about my first grade friend, where she was, if she had married, did she have children. I am now saddened that I shall not have the opportunity to become friends again in our older years. May Our Good Lord's Hand touch each of you who are grieving for her and provide Comfort in knowing that we will see each other again as He has promised. Sincerely, Sharon Byers Conner

Mary was a fine person and a good athlete. She and I graduated together. In fact we went to school together all 12 years. I just wanted to send my condolences and I will pray for Mary’s family.
