Ruth Culbertson Schaeffer was born in Zanesville, Ohio in April 1928 and died in Canton, North Carolina on November 12, 2018.

Ruth was the daughter of Nellie and Walter Culbertson who raised her in Youngstown, Ohio. In 1949, after receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Dennison University, Ruth married Raymond Erskine and moved to Orlando, Florida where her daughter, Denise, was born. Ruth worked professionally at Orange Memorial Hospital and was active in several local social and community groups. After the dissolution of her marriage to Raymond Erskine, Ruth married William Schaeffer and moved to Gainesville, Florida. There she worked professionally for the Alachua County Information and Referral Service and the Head Start Program. Ruth lived for her horses and loved her farm in Gainesville where she looked after various livestock, dogs, and any other animal that needed special attention. She enjoyed gardening and cooking, and her farm home was the neighborhood center for socializing with her many friends. Ruth was an active horseperson into her 80’s.

She is survived by her daughter, Denise Erksine Schmeisser (Ian) of Clyde, North Carolina; grandsons, Hans Schmeisser (Shelly) of Tifton, Georgia, Kurt Schmeisser (Brittney) of Winder, Georgia; and four great-grandchildren.

Private services to celebrate Ruth’s life will be held at a later date.

Should you so desire, donations may be made to your favorite charity in memory of Ruth.

I met Ruth through friends in the 70’s. We were able to ride together a number of times. She was a delightful human, always charming, warm and caring. Condolences to her family.

Ruth and I were co-workers at Alachua County HeadStart Program. Ruth always hosted the Xmas Celebration at her home. It was a delight and everyone had a great time seeing her babies (horses).
