A Kind and Caring Man

Canton- Billy Dean Hagood, age 83, a man who will forever be remembered as a friend to everyone, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 10, 2020.

Billy was born May 25, 1937 in Pulaski, Tennessee to the late William Carson Hagood and the late Dorothy Lucille Roberts Hagood.  Mr. Hagood had been employed as the store manager of Kuhns 5¢& 10¢ Variety Store in Pulaski for ten dedicated years. In 1984 he moved to Haywood County to make his home and became the manager of Lays Dime Store in Waynesville where he was well known throughout the community and made many lifelong friendships during his faithful sixteen years of employment.  Mr. Hagood was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Canton.  He loved to spend time in his garden and tirelessly worked many hours manicuring his lawn. Billy also was a talented carpenter and enjoyed woodworking.   In the words of his family, “Billy never met a stranger” and he was truly a blessing to his family and his many friends. He loved his family deeply and we give thanks for his blessed life. “Well done thou good and faithful servant.”

 In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Betty Cook and Ruth Davis.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 61 years, Peggy Young Hagood of Canton; his sons, Don Hagood (Cindy)  of  LaFayette, Georgia and Barry Hagood (Angela) of Canton; his daughters, Teresa Smith (Billy) of Canton, Melinda O’Neill (Tim) of Canton and Beth Burnette (Timmy) of Weaverville; a brother, Roger Hagood (Ann) of Texas; a special uncle, J.M. Hagood of Pulaski, TN; 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and a multitude of friends.

A service of remembrance to celebrate the life of Mr. Hagood will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, June 14, 2020 in the chapel of Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Canton. Pastor Roy Kilby and Pastor Peter Constantian will be officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Beth, Peggy, Teresa and Melinda I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I spent so much time with Beth when i was little and he was such a great man and always working on the yard or outside. I haven't seen him or the family except TERESA in many years but Beth was my best friend growing up and I miss her. He will be missed! He was such a sweet man. He used to set at Frank’s Grocery with my daddy and pappy and they would speak to everyone. And after Dad passed he would always say hello and ask me how Mom was doing. I can just picture him and daddy setting on a bench in heaven and saying hey brother to everyone who passes by! Such a kind man. I hold some wonderful, fond memories of Lays Dime Store on Main street in Waynesville. Always bought my bug , hippie round Summer Sunglasses there, and my favorite Cherry Ice. My Grandparents took me there to shop. He will be missed but will Always have those fond memories of him and the store. Never met a stranger. Blessings to family and friends.
