In God's Loving Care
Canton – In the late evening hours of Sunday, September 20, 2015 we said goodbye to Clara Smith Buchanan, a beloved mother and a true lady that had touched the lives of so many throughout her blessed 103 years of life.
Mrs. Buchanan was born in the Christmas season on December 26, 1911 in Franklin, North Carolina to the late John L. Smith and the late Lorena Crawford Smith and was the ninth child born to a family of ten children. In 1929 she became the wife of Guy Edison Buchanan and in 1936 they moved with their children to Haywood County to make their home. Clara became very well known in Canton as a lady who helped everyone and truly brought sunshine into your day when you were with her. Mrs. Buchanan was a faithful employee with Hudson’s Department Store in Canton until its closing and then she continued working at Thriftee Drugs until she retired at the young age of 84. Clara resided on Academy Street in Canton and during her working years she amazed everyone in town as she was seen each and every day walking to and from her job in downtown Canton. She was a talented quilter and will always be remembered as a gracious hostess to everyone who visited the Buchanan home. Her faith was an important part of her life and Mrs. Buchanan was the oldest living member of Canton First Baptist Church and had also been a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class. Clara was given the blessing of being able to remain at her home until the age of 98 when she moved to the Brian Center in Waynesville in 2009. Clara Smith Buchanan was the light of her family and they thank God that they were given Clara to teach them, to encourage them and to love them for all of these wonderful years of her life.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Guy E. Buchanan who passed away in 1969; a granddaughter, Patti Buchanan; sons-in-law, Dick Hannah and John Spencer and a great-granddaughter, Jennifer Spencer.
