Waynesville- David Eugene “Gene” Mathis, 59, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Friday, December 17, 2021.

Gene was born August 8, 1962 to the late Thomas Eugene Mathis and the late Joyce Virginia “Gin” Mathis. He made his home in Haywood County all his life and worked as a pipefitter and construction foreman his entire career, last working for MB Haynes. He was a true outdoorsman, enjoying camping with family and friends, fishing and water skiing but most of all deer hunting. He enjoyed motor cross and his Harley Davidson’s and was a gun enthusiast and collector.  Gene loved and cherished his family and friends and he will be deeply missed by all. We rejoice in knowing that he is in Heaven on this day during this blessed Christmas season.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Frankie Mathis and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Surviving are his daughter, Hanna Mathis of Waynesville; a grandson, Jaxon Mathis of Waynesville; his former wife and the mother of his daughter, Kim Mathis of Waynesville; three special sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law, one niece and two nephews; an aunt and two uncles; special friends; Kenny Dotson of Maggie Valley and J.D. "Gus" Bright of Clyde,  several cousins and a multitude of extended family and many friends.

The Mathis family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff of Maggie Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation for the excellent care and attention that was given to Gene. Also they send a heartfelt thank you to Amanda Vance, a special family friend whose kindness was a blessing to Gene and the family.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate the life of Mr. Mathis will be held from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Monday, December 27, 2021 in the chapel of Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Gene’s memory to the Tuscola High School Band, 564 Tuscola Road , Waynesville, NC 28786 or Tuscola High School Sportsman Club, Haywood County Schools Foundation, 1230 North Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
