A Precious Lady Never Forgotten

Photo of Dora Murphy Pressley - 1941-2022

Canton - On Saturday, September 10, 2022, Dora Murphy Pressley, a greatly loved mother, grandmother and friend was carried to her eternal heavenly home by the angels.

Dora’s life journey began in Buncombe County during the fall season of October 12, 1941.  She was born to the late Pink Murphy and the late Nellie Howington Murphy and had made her home in Haywood County most of her life.  Dora attended Biltmore High School in Asheville where she made many friendships that she never forgot throughout her lifetime.  A strong independent lady, Dora had been employed as a long-distance truck driver with Reco Trucking Company making her way all across the United States. It always seemed as if she fought the hardest of battles but succeeded at everything she attempted.  Ms.Pressley was a lady of faith and had attended Bethel Baptist Church. She loved her Lord, her family, and her friends, and she was indeed blessed with a kind and giving heart, always caring and concerned about her community. In remembering their beloved mother and grandmother, her family will forever cherish Dora’s love for the summer season. The summers brought wonderful and happy memories of spending time on her houseboat and fishing competitions among the family, to see who could catch the most fish. Dora enjoyed tending her garden, especially growing a bounty of tomatoes and hot peppers. She was also an amazing cook and her delicious homemade cornbread was a favorite of the entire family. A treasured memory of  Dora was how she enjoyed drinking coffee all throughout the day and her family recalls her coffee cup was never empty. She held an immeasurable love for her family. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her world. Dora loved being  “spoiled” by her granddaughters, they were attentive to her every need and the joy they shared with their grandmother will never be forgotten. Dora’s legacy will live on forever in those she loved and the many lives that she has touched. Her beautiful smile, her caring heart, and the sound of her laughter, will always be remembered. We rejoice for the 80 years of her full and wonderful life and in the words of her family, “Love never dies.”

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Grady, Lum, Fred and Charles Murphy.

Surviving are her children, Jimmy Murphy and Vickie,  Mike Murphy,  Gwen McSpadden and Brad, Bobby Searcy and Samantha, Kenny Searcy and Sarenia and Tongia Wood and Jeff; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 2 special baby blessings on the way; also a special friend, Heath Reavis.

The funeral service to honor the life of Ms. Pressley will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, September 16, 2022 in the chapel of Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Pastor Ricky Harris will be officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 12:00 noon until 2:00pm prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in Bethel Community Cemetery.

My heart breaks for your entire family. Dora was my best friend for many years. I remember her laugh.... I hear it in my heart today. We spent many hours together when we were neighbors and many many hours on our houseboats and at the marina. When my daughter, Faith, was little she loved to hear Dora tell stories and always said "Dora tell us another one!" Dora loved her family. I hate circumstances prevented me from being there today..... I loved her.
Heaven was missing you. Praying for you all.
