Asheville- Our hearts are saddened as we say goodbye to a man that has touched many lives and has brought much happiness and joy to those blessed to know him, Eric Douglas Broyles, Sr. , age 75, passed away Sunday, June 26, 2022.

Eric was born January 30, 1947 in Buncombe County and at the age of 3 months old he was lovingly chosen by his adopted parents, the late, Everette Broyles and the late Edna Mae Honeycutt Broyles to be their son. Eric was a blessing all throughout his life and with his engaging personality, his great sense of humor and his never met a stranger outlook in life, he was indeed well-known all across Western North Carolina. He was employed as a paper carrier for more than 40 years, distributing the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Charlotte Observer, and the Asheville Citizen-Times. Eric had also been employed in the healthcare industry and had worked at Memorial Mission and St. Joseph Hospitals for several dedicated years. He loved his community and faithfully gave of his time as a volunteer fireman with the Woodfin Fire Department for many years. He was an avid Ham Radio Operator and his call sign was KJ4KEU. Eric made a multitude of friendships during his lifetime and he will never ever be forgotten. To know him was to love him and Eric’s daily Christian posts of thoughts for the day truly brought an uplift of promise to his close family and friends. He loved his family with all his heart and soul and he shall be deeply missed by each of them. As we remember Eric, let us tell a happy story or share a humorous joke in his memory- Eric would be pleased.

Surviving are his wife, Libby Harmon Broyles of Asheville; his sons, Doug Broyles and fiancée Stephanie Gosnell of Asheville and Bryan Broyles and fiancée Wendy Miller of Leicester; a granddaughter, Andreya Prieur; a great-granddaughter, Paisley Faith Ball; and many dear friends.

To honor the request of Mr. Broyles no formal funeral services will be held.

The Broyles family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation in Weaverville, DaVita Weaverville Dialysis and also the Woodfin Fire Department for their care and concern for Eric.

Memorials may be made in Eric’s memory to the American Kidney Foundation, 7413 Six Forks Road #255, Raleigh, NC 27615 or to one’s favorite charity.

It's been difficult to find the right words to put into this place... You were a friend to many and among the best I've had. I'm going to miss those random video and telephone calls. Many other hams will miss your generosity, the willingness you've always had to give of yourself so they could experience facets of our hobby they may not have otherwise tried. I know my little grandson Peyton will always remember you fondly for all the times we were on a video call when he was here. He truly thought you were Santa and to many you really were. To Libby, Bryan and Doug - We offer our deepest condolences from our house to yours and pray for your comfort during this time and beyond. Fly high, old friend. You've received your reward.
