A Blessing to Our Family

Photo of Ethan Daniel Gentry - 1996-2020

Waynesville- On Wednesday, May 27, 2020, Ethan Daniel Gentry, age 23, a beloved son and brother entered into his eternal Heavenly home.

Ethan was born during the winter season of December 27, 1996 in Haywood County. He was the son of the late Danny Lee Gentry and Angie Brookshire Stanford of Canton. Ethan was a dedicated and loyal employee of Lowes in Waynesville.  He enjoyed music and Ethan was indeed talented at playing the bass guitar. He loved to fish and could often be found fishing in his favorite mountain streams among the mountains where he was born and raised. Ethan also enjoyed spending time on his computer and many hours gaming.  When remembering Ethan his entire family happily recalls his great love of Chinese food and eating pizza with his family and friends.  His beloved memory will be a part of those blessed to know him forever and in the words of his mother, “Ethan was my Gentle Giant.”  Our hearts spill over with love and wonderful memories of Ethan as we give thanks for his life and the blessing that he was to each of us.

In addition to his Dad, Ethan was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Viola and Paul Gentry and his maternal grandfather, Jack Brookshire.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Angie Brookshire Stanford of Canton; his maternal grandmother, Helen Brookshire; siblings, Jack Stanford (Tammy), Mary Stanford, Brian Gentry (Amanda), Nathan Gentry, Michael Gentry (Courtney) and also numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service to honor the life of Ethan will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, June 7, at New Cruso Cemetery. Pastor Scotty Rollins and Pastor Harry Worley will be officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Jack Stanford, Brian Gentry, Michael Gentry, Nathan Gentry, Brady Brookshire, David Alan Brookshire, Jesse Brookshire, and Dillon Brookshire.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Gentry family.

Your local boy had a worldwide reach, with friends in Great Britain, Sweden, South Africa and beyond. As one of his friends through gaming, I knew Ethan as 'Mad Bro' or 'Bruce' - we all have our handles and nicknames but it doesn't detach us from our real identities. They are our idealised selves, our imagination, our armour... but we still share our real world experiences, thoughts and feelings. Ethan was a unique character who projected strength and attitude, but retained vulnerability, honesty and love. He was the skill, strength and force in our group. In our games, if you needed protection or someone taking down, he was on it before you even asked, and he was great at it. We were safer, bolder, and more bad-ass because of him. He always had plenty of sass, bravado and wouldn't back down from a challenge. There was another side to him that needs recognition too... because while he could dominate, and swear, and bulldoze... he had a gentle nature within. He had love to feel. He had honesty, integrity and kindness. He was always kind to me. He was always gentle with me even when it was out of his character in the moment. He cared about being honest with people and doing the right thing - he actually tried to do that where he could. That's already far better than many examples of human beings I've seen. Ethan was a core part of our international group, he was our friend, and we will miss him always. There's no way to make this better or tolerable. I sincerely hope Ethan's friends, family and those who knew him can support each other. I hope some lasting, stronger togetherness can be developed to keep you all safe and well and cared for. <3

Ethan was a great friend for years, one that I knew and spoke to almost every day, He was a kind and beautiful soul and always had a good word to say about people. I never had the pleasure of meeting Ethan in person but I was lucky enough to count him as family, we laughed and cried together on many occasions late into the night. Sending all my love and deepest condolences for your loss. He will be in my heart forever. Ethan, I love you man, and miss you every day.

Ethan was an online friend of mine but more like an older brother, he always gave me advice and supported whatever decision I was making. He was truly an amazing friend and always made me smile and laugh. I will miss him greatly, and I hope he is at peace now.

I have known Ethan only for a few years and never met him in person but he has already left a lasting impression on me. I'm honored to count him as friend and he will be missed. He knew how to make us laugh and his presence shaped our group in a significant way. He had a natural comedic talent about him and I learned a lot from him. The way in which he used his humor, timing and ways of talking was very impressive and natural. We had a lot of fun evenings together. I wished we could have met in person someday. I hope his family and friends know that Ethan made friends around the world and they feel that loss with them. Bruce, I love you and you will be in my thoughts.
