A Caring and Loving Lady

Waynesville- During the peaceful afternoon of Wednesday, August 26, 2020, Melitta Gail Davis Childress, a beautiful and kind lady who had devoted her life to caring for others, entered into her glorious place in Heaven with her loving family at her side.

Gail was born in the fall season of October 15, 1961 to the late William Orion Davis, Jr. and the late Annie Rogers Davis. She was a lifelong resident of Haywood County and during her younger years, Gail overcame many hardships and was indeed an example of strength and courage as she matured into a lovely and caring lady. She was a graduate of Tuscola High School and chose to continue her education at Haywood Technical Institute where she received her Associate’s Degree. While employed at Midway Medical Center as a medical assistant she made many friendships and her kindness was greatly appreciated and always remembered by her patients.  She was also employed by Southwestern Child Development Center in Sylva where her great love for children brought a blessing into their lives each and every day.  Gail later became a private caregiver and she truly brought a bright ray of sunshine into the lives of those who needed her special care. Mrs. Childress held a strong faith and she was a member of Ratcliff Cove Baptist Church in Waynesville.  Gail was an avid reader, loved beautiful flowers and her artistic ability was evident in her adult coloring books that she enjoyed as a hobby.  Her concern for all animals, especially dogs and cats, held a special place in her caring heart.  Gail was deeply loved and in the words of her family, “She was compassionate, loving, always positive and she never complained.” A wonderful wife and mother, Gail was our everything and her precious spirit will be a part of us forever.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her special aunt and uncle who loved her as a daughter, Flora and Graham Rogers; her sister, Kay Jean Dunn; and her brother, Charles White.

Surviving are her loving husband of 36 years, Alan J. Childress of Waynesville; her son, Travis A. Childress of Waynesville; a brother, Jimmy Davis of Waynesville; sisters, Jo Gardner and husband, Gary of Travelers Rest, SC and Susie Slone of Greenville, SC; several nieces and nephews, and also Gail’s special dog, Ollie.

A funeral service to remember and celebrate the life of Gail will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, August 29, 2020 at Ratcliffe Cove Baptist Church in Waynesville. Pastor Tracy Smith will be officiating.  The family will be receiving friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. The burial will follow at Ratcliffe Cove Cemetery.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Roz Fisher, the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office, and also to Haywood Hospice and Palliative Care for all of their love and support.

Memorials may be made in Gail’s memory to the Ratcliffe Cove Cemetery Fund at PO Box 1196, Waynesville, NC 28786, or to Ratcliffe Cove Baptist Church at 1300 Ratcliffe Cove Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Childress family.

We shared many vacations together. Our children grew up together. Alan and Travis had a wonderful wife and mother. We will all miss her tremendously. I was saddened to hear about Gail when a friend texted me the news today. Even though I had lost touch with Gail over the years (I graduated Haywood Tech with her and she was in my wedding 35 years ago), what a smile came to my face as I remember her just as her sweet obituary described. She was always smiling and so kind hearted. Blessings and comfort to her family.

Dear Allen and Travis, my heart breaks with you for the loss of precious Gail. And you will feel that loss always but God will always be with you for He says, "I will never leave you or forsake you" Hebrews 13: 5. I love you all, and am praying for you. Stay close to the "Lord" And " I (the Lord speaking) will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with my eye" Psalm 32:8 (NKJV Bible).
