Canton- Harry “Bud” Lewis Ray, age 87, peacefully passed away at his home with his loving family at his side on New Year’s Eve Thursday, December 31, 2020.

Bud was born August 26, 1933 in Haywood County to the late Thomas Roland Ray and the late Anna Dee Birchfield Ray. He was blessed to be surrounded by a large family and cherished the happy memories of growing up in Haywood County.  Bud had a delightful and outgoing personality and he enjoyed talking to people and he made new friends everywhere he went- he never met a stranger! Bud was a man who was always true to his word.  Mr. Ray was a former employee of Pressley Paint and Body Shop in Canton and also Wilsons Spring Company in Asheville. He was “the expert” on paint and bodywork and he was known throughout Western North Carolina for his talent.  He was an avid automobile racing fan and he also held a special place in his heart for all animals.  He dedicated many hours to taking care of his dogs, Motley, Axl, and Bear.  Mr. Ray was a member of Morning Star United Methodist Church.  Bud was a good and kind man, and in the words of his children, “He would give anyone the shirt off his back”.  We give thanks for his life and for being such a devoted husband, a wonderful father and grandfather. As we remember Bud, let us reach out to someone who might need a helping hand and do an act of kindness. Bud would be pleased.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Jane Best Ray; brothers, Tommy and Jerry Ray; his sisters, Elizabeth Ray, Bobby Ray, Ruby Ray, Katherine Ray, Gladys Ray, Geraldine Ray, Jane Ray, and Joyce Warren.

Surviving are his daughter, Selena Mamph and son-in-law, John Mamph; his son, Sam Ray; grandchildren, Sam Ray, Jr., Julie Ray, Jagger Tomkins, and Halen Tomkins; great-grandchildren, Silas Ray, Ruby Ray, Kiya Tomkins, and Blayklen Tomkins; a brother Charles Ray; and many dear friends.

A service of remembrance for Mr. Ray will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, January 17, 2021 in the chapel of Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Canton. Chaplain Patrick Davis will be officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Morning Star Community Cemetery.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Ray family.

Selena, our deepest condolences go out to you! I remember him telling me he couldn't wait to be with Jane again because he missed her so bad. He is now where he longed to be, and what a beautiful reunion I am sure it was! He's smiling down on us with that wonderful smile! Bud was very special to Steve and I and it breaks our hearts to know he is gone, but just like him and Jane, we will meet again!
