A Kind and Giving Man

Photo of Hugh Robert Boyd - 1947-2020

Leicester- Hugh Robert Boyd, age 72, a loving brother, daddy, and grandfather, passed away peacefully entering into his heavenly home on Wednesday, February 5, 2020.

Mr. Boyd was born May 4, 1947 and was one of thirteen children born to the late Zeb B. Boyd and the late Virgie Surrett Boyd. Hugh was blessed to be born into a home that was filled with an abundance of love, joy and wonderful happy memories that each of them will cherish forever.  He had made his home in Buncombe County all of his life and Hugh deeply loved the mountains where he was born and raised.  All throughout his life he had enjoyed fishing in his favorite mountain streams and also going hunting among the mountains in Leicester.   Farming his land was his great joy and Hugh was also a gifted and talented rock mason.  Mr. Boyd had attended Chestnut Grove Baptist Church and also Cross Rock Church in Leicester.  He was indeed a kind and giving man and in the words of his family, “He had a heart of gold.” Hugh loved all of his family deeply and his memory shall remain a part of each of them forever.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two of his brothers, Howard and Kenneth Boyd.

Surviving are his daughter, Melissa Boyd Stanley of Marshall;  a son, Billy Boyd of Leicester; his sisters and brothers, Pauline Caldwell, Viola Terry, Joyce Ann Payne, Harold Boyd, Gerald Boyd, Carl Boyd, Keith Boyd, Louise Justice, Betty Ann Santos, and David “Bob” Boyd; as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren that Hugh loved deeply.

Also we give thanks for those who touched Hugh’s life with their special love and compassion and who were indeed a blessing in his life: Kelly Stewart, Steven Boyd, Gerald Boyd, Carla Payne, Larry Angel, Jason Terry and Bob & Sue Garrett.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, February 9, 2020 at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Leicester. Reverend Gene Turner will be officiating.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Boyd family.

Condolences from family and friends

To Hugh’s family: We are saddened at the loss of your Dear One. He was a memorable friend and neighbor. We planted a garden plot together one year. He always said he didn’t like the harvesting. That was the part I liked, so it was a deal I could go with. In Sympathy for your loss. Susan Wilson

You aren’t supposed to have a favorite Uncle...but you SHINE! Ol Gerald second place lol. You loved to joke and laugh. I wonder what you and the gang are doing right now?? I’ll see you all soon!! I just wonder who you are walking over Heaven with tonight? Look for me!! I never told you enough how much I loved you! I resented the time I lost with my Mom. Maybe one day I’ll be half the woman she is! Don’t cry for Hugh! He’s dancing!! If you are reading this and want to see Hugh again ... please accept Jesus as your Savior. It’s that easy.

My prayers are with Hugh's family. It was a real shock to hear that Hugh is gone. We were friends since we worked together at the tree company back in the late 80's. Ill never forget the time we ran into each other in Cherokee we were both a fishing we decided to fish together for a few hours so were walking along the road and I look off the bank what looked like a good fishing spot I told ol Hugh lets head down here and see what we can catch he was all for it too so here we go making our way down this bank when I tripped and fell went head first and went rolling down the hill with my bait flying out of my cup and fishing pole rolling along with me lol Lord it was a shocker at first but we both laughed at it after the fact lol. Hugh was concerned for me and was ready to take me to the hospital lucky me I was ok. He was a good friend and co-worker.
