A Man of Faith and A Man Who Loved His Family

On this day we remember the life of James David “J.D.” Oliver who passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, and entered into his place in the glorious kingdom of heaven. We are thankful for J.D. and the 82 years of his blessed life.

He was born April 5, 1942, to the late James Von Oliver and the late Blanche Pressley Oliver. J.D. was a lifelong resident of Haywood County and he was a pillar of strength and resilience, much like the mountains that had surrounded him all of his life. As an honored Green Beret in the United States Army, J.D. served his country with valor and great distinction. He was indeed a man of strong work ethic and J.D. devoted his working career to Blue Ridge Paper Products where he retired with 37 years of loyal service.

His great love for sports was truly evident, especially when it came to supporting Pisgah High School and the Pisgah Bears. Whether it was watching his grandson play ball on the field or the court, or supporting his granddaughter leading cheers from the sideline- J.D. was always there and so very proud of both of them. The Atlanta Braves was his favorite baseball team and J.D. was always a true and faithful fan.

He enjoyed going camping with family and friends and J.D. found great peace and solace in spending time outdoors and making wonderful memories that will be forever cherished. Also his appreciation for enjoying “great food” was a fact well-known by J.D.'s family and friends and never let us forget that!

J.D. was a devoted Christian and a lifelong member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he was deeply loved by his church family. His membership with Sonoma Masonic Lodge # 472 in Bethel further exemplified his commitment to community and brotherhood.

J.D. will forever be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was truly a good man and devoted to his faith and his family.  He was an inspiration to many and his life was an example for us to follow.  His legacy is not just in the memories we will carry in our hearts but let us take great comfort in knowing that his spirit will be with us forever and J.D. will always be watching over us from his home in Heaven. He will be deeply missed.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Doug Oliver.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Linda Rogers Oliver of Canton; his beloved daughter and son-in-law; Jalinda and Alan Wright of Canton; his grandchildren that he loved with all his heart and soul, Emeri and Maddox;  his sister-in-law, Pat Crisp and Ronnie and many dear friends.

A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Oliver will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, June 2, 2024, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Reverend Perry Brindley will be officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial with Military Honors will be held at Bethel Community Cemetery.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Oliver family.
