James Wilson Chambers, 87, of Waynesville, North Carolina, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024.

He was born on February 18, 1937, in Haywood County. Wilson had been an employee of Champion International, where he retired in 1999 with 39 years of dedicated service.

Wilson will be remembered for his devotion to his family and his commitment to his faith. He leaves behind his loving wife of 69 years, Lillian Brown Chambers; his children, James Ray Chambers (Lynn) of Canton, Rhonda Chambers Smathers (Mack) of Clyde, and Wilson Todd Chambers of Marion; a sister, Louise Chambers Haney. Wilson was a proud grandfather to James Michael Chambers (Laura) of Madison, Wisconsin, James Zachary Smathers (Laura) of Raleigh, and Ezekiel Woodrow Smathers of Canton. He also cherished his three great-grandchildren, as well as two nieces and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Kate Chambers, his father, Woodrow Wilson Chambers, his mother, Katy Louise Frady Chambers, and his brother, Robert Carey Chambers.

Wilson found solace and strength through his faith and was an active member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church. He served as a deacon and taught an adult Sunday school class for decades. His dedication to his church and his community was truly remarkable.

In his free time, Wilson enjoyed tending to his garden and was an avid fly fisherman. These hobbies brought him much joy and allowed him to connect with nature.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 29, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park, located at 886 Russ Avenue, Waynesville. The arrangements are being handled by Crawford/Ray Funeral Home in Canton, North Carolina.

James Wilson Chambers will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of love, faith, and dedication will forever be cherished by his family and friends.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Chambers family.
