Mr. Joseph Frank Laird III, a much admired and highly respected gentleman, passed away to his heavenly home on Wednesday, May 3, 2023.  A native of Miami, Florida, he was the son of the late Mr. Joseph Frank Laird, Jr. and the late Mrs. Edna Hill Daniel.  Following his formative years in Florida, he relocated to the mountains of Western North Carolina and settled in Candler, North Carolina where he maintained his residence for 56 years.

Mr. Laird embraced the value of education and attended the University of Florida, the University of Miami, and Brevard Junior College.  In addition to his educational background, he served his country in the United States Navy having been honorably discharged in 1962.  Occupationally, Mr. Laird excelled as a Land Surveyor, a position he carried out with honesty and integrity for 46 years.

Mr. Laird was a devout Christian and was a dedicated member of Pole Creek Baptist Church. In the words of his family, “he loved his church.”  Along with the love of his church, Mr. Laird was a member of the Hominy Masonic organization.  In his leisure time, he specifically enjoyed all aspects of fishing. In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by his step-mother, Ruby Laird; his step-father, William Daniel; his son, Kelley M. Laird; his grandson, Kelley M. Laird, Jr.; and his sister, Linda L. Barnette

Those left to cherish his memory are his dedicated wife, Betty Penland Laird; his daughter, Aundrea L. Carroll; his son, Deric Laird; his grandsons, Gordon Laird, Hunter Laird, and Evan Laird; his granddaughter, Ashley Lambert; his great-granddaughters, Harper Laird, and Madilynn Laird; his brother, Gary Laird; his brothers-in-law, Greg Penland and Jimmy Barnette; several nieces and nephews; and many special friends.

A memorial service to honor the special life of Mr. Joseph Frank Laird III will be held on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at 3:00 o'clock in the afternoon at Pole Creek Baptist Church, 96 Snow Hill Church Road, Candler, North Carolina. The Reverend Dennis Thurman and the Reverend Ben Heise will be officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment, with military rights, will follow at Mount Moriah Wesleyan Church, 1 Fairmont Road, Candler, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that any memorials to honor Mr. Laird be made to the Valor Hospice Program, 1100 Tunnel Road, Asheville, North Carolina 28805; or to the Pole Creek Baptist Church Children’s Ministry, 96 Snow Hill Church Road, Candler, North Carolina, 28715.
