A Special Lady

Photo of Lois Owens Gibson - 1931-2026

Lois Owens Gibson, entered into her heavenly home on July 10, 2026. Her blessed life of 94 years was a life filled with faith, love, and caring for others.

Lois was born on November 11, 1931, in Buncombe County to the late William Owens and the late Mamie Owens. She was a 1950 graduate of  The Allen School in Asheville. Her early working career was with Crawford  Nursing Home in Canton and also American Enka Corporation. Following her great love for children, Lois attended Southwestern Community College, earning a degree in early childhood development. Upon her graduation, she became employed with Southwestern Child Development until her retirement in 1992. This was not just a career to Lois- it was her true calling. She continued to touch the lives of little ones by becoming a part of the foster grandparent program at North Canton Elementary School, where she was deeply loved by all the children – and by everyone!

Lois was a lady of devout faith and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess and many other positions in the church.  She was also a trained pianist and played the piano for Pleasant Grove for many years.

She enjoyed doing craftwork, working in her flower garden, and in her quiet moments, Lois loved completing her word search puzzles and coloring.

Lois leaves behind a world that is kinder and more filled with love because she was in it. She was a gift to all our lives, a pillar for her family, a faithful friend, and a blessing to every child she guided. We shall carry her precious spirit in our hearts forever.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Gibson, Sr; her daughters, Carroll Jones and Cheryl Gibson; sisters, Doris Owens and Mary Jo Howell.

Surviving are her sons, Walter Gibson, Jr. ( Brenda ) of Canton and Reginald Gibson ( Mae) of Hickory; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; a special sister-in-law, Christiana Gibson, and cousins, Patti Owens and AL Owens, and a multitude of dear friends.

A Service of Remembrance and Homegoing Celebration will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. The family will be receiving friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will follow at Crawford / Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is deeply honored to be caring for the Gibson family.

A memory of Ms Lois, I was a young mother of a mischievous little boy, without restation every morning when dropping him off at daycare; there would be Ms.Lois. She never failed to open her sweater up, wrapping him in her arms and giving him a gentle kiss on the cheek. When i seen she had passed i could see Jesus opening his arms to hug her like she had done my child so many mornings. She was a special person and made a impression in many children's lives. I am sure my son has already found her in her up there.

I was so saddened to hear that Mrs. Gibson had passed away. She was a dedicated and beloved foster grandmother in my kindergarten classroom for many years who we all truly loved. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Just learned that Lois had passed away. She was a joy to know. For years she was a blessing to my classroom. My students totally adored her. They always wanted to work in her group first. She loved doing crafts with the kids but she was also wonderful at playing games with them that helped them reach whatever the goal was that was being taught. She will be truly missed. Thanks to her family for sharing her with the teachers at North Canton Elementary.
