Maxine DeWeese Brown of Waynesville passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Friday, March 22, 2024, at CarePartners Hospice Solace Center in Asheville.

She was employed by Champion International in the 1980s and 1990s and enjoyed her long and happy retirement.  Maxine was a longtime member of Canton First Baptist Church.  She loved her Lord and especially enjoyed her Sunday School class with other women who had been her friends since her youth.  She was a great animal lover and supported the ASPCA.  She raised and showed a horse in her youth, and loved many dogs over the years.  She also supported local law enforcement and veterans through the Fraternal Order of Police and the American Legion. She loved music and liked to turn up the volume and dance.

Maxine was a kind and sweet soul with a wonderful and unique sense of humor, and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded by her parents, Leonard and Flora DeWeese; brother Stanley B. DeWeese; nephew Gary DeWeese, and best friend Novella Brown.

She is survived by her nieces; Pamela DeWeese of Charlottesville, VA, and Cathy DeWeese Russell (Walter) of Waynesville, and also Brenda Singleton, Linda Craig, and Kevin and Angie Brown all of Canton and their families.

The family would like to thank the CarePartners Hospice Solace Center for their compassionate care of our aunt in her final days.  The staff and volunteers were exceptionally kind and helpful.

A funeral service to honor the life of Maxine will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 6, 2024, in the Chapel at Crawford / Ray Funeral Home. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  Burial will follow in Crawford / Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Brown family.

Condolences from family and friends

I am a long time friend of Cathy and her family. I am saddened for the DeWeese family loss but have joy in knowing that one day the whole family will be together again and rejoice in the Lords presence.
