Canton/ Mauldin - Mitchell Darren Mathews, of Canton and also a resident of Mauldin, South Carolina, passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2015. To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the Heaven…… Mitchell was born on a winter day, December 2, 1980. Words could never express the love and pride his parents felt when they held their newborn son. Mitchell was a blessing and each day of his life was a joyous gift to his family. Mitchell was a kind and caring child and his early years were filled with fun and carefree days of playing ball, snow skiing in the winter, water skiing at Lake Hartwell and riding motorcycles. He also proudly attained a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. Mitchell made many friendships that were cherished throughout his life. He was a 1999 graduate of Pisgah High School, attended Haywood Community College and later received a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Engineering from Western Carolina University in 2006. He was employed with Verizon Wireless as a Telecommunication Technician. Mitchell loved all types of music and he was very talented at playing the guitar. He embraced every opportunity to spend time with his family at summer picnics and fun cookouts. Mitchell also loved going to the movies! The wonderful memories of his familiy’s celebrations and gatherings will be cherished forever. His Christian faith was an important part of his life and he was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. As we say goodbye to our beloved son, brother, uncle and friend, our hearts are broken as we feel the emptiness without Mitchell. We are to remember the joy and the laughter that he brought into our lives. We are to remember the lessons in life that he has taught us and we are to remember his unyielding courage. In memory of Mitchell, tell someone that you love them, perform a random act of kindness and give someone a loving hug. Mitchell was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Marjorie and Roy Holland and his paternal grandparents, Paul and Lola Mathews. Left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted parents, Charles Ray Mathews and Rita Holland Mathews of Canton; a sister, Margie Dowell and her husband, Jason Dowell of Fletcher; a brother, Mark Mathews; his beloved niece and nephew, Presley Dowell, and Oakley Dowell; several aunts, uncles and cousins and Mitchell’s faithful companion and best friend, his Boston Terrier, MoJo. A celebration of Mitchell’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 15, 2015 at Bethel Baptist Church. Pastor Roy Kilby will be officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the church from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. Private entombment will be held at The Horizon at Crawford / Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde.
