Candler – Patricia Ann Penland, age 72, passed away Wednesday, August 5, 2015. A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, Patricia was the daughter of the late William McKinley Joseph Henry Penland, Sr. and the late Opal Jeanette Hagan Penland. She loved going to the Outer Banks and Ocracoke Island and enjoyed camping at Carolina Hemlocks Campground in Burnsville. Preceding her in death in addition to her parents were brothers, Robert Hagen and Arthur Penland and a sister, Beverly Smith. Surviving are her son, William Grant Penland; one brother, William Penland, Jr.; a sister, Vonda Surrett and a niece, Michelle Shook, who was like a daughter and many more nieces and nephews. Also surviving is her 16 year old dog, Samantha. A private family gathering to celebrate her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Buncombe County Animal Shelter, 16 Forever Friend Lane, Asheville, NC 28806. “When one door closes, another door opens” Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Penland family.
