Greatly Loved and Deeply Missed

Penny Stanley Sorrells, a special lady whose loving spirit was like the gentle whisper in the wind, that carried love and happiness everywhere she went, sadly left us on Monday, June 3, 2024, and entered into God’s loving care.

She was born February 24, 1947, to the late Charles Stanley and the late Carolyn Plemmons Stanley and we all have been blessed with the 77 wonderful years of Penny’s life. She has made her home in Haywood County most of her life and in the serene embrace of the peaceful mountains that surround Sorrells Cove in Clyde stands the beautiful home of Penny and Howard that is a true haven of comfort and love and where hours spent on the front porch have brought many cherished memories for family and friends.

Penny was loved by everyone and her talents were endless. She was an amazing cook and a wonderful homemaker and  her hands were never idle- cooking, baking, canning, and preparing delicious food for her family and friends who were always welcome to the Sorrells home. Her kitchen was a place where the impossible became possible. From cooking groundhog for her grandfather to even preparing rattlesnake meat for some close friends at their request! Penny’s delicious homemade cornbread dressing was a favorite of everyone and the holidays were not complete without her dressing on the table. As the cafeteria manager at Pisgah High School she made certain that school lunches were ready and tasty for the hundreds of students she fed each day. Penny was like a ray of sunshine to all the students and always made each of them feel special and appreciated.

A talented seamstress- Penny could make anything. Her beautiful quilts were stitched with love and they each held stories within the special pieces of fabric she chose for each one.  What treasured keepsakes these will be for her family.  The lovely flowers that surrounded her home were examples of Penny’s “green thumb” and proved the fact that she could grow anything.

She was a devout Christian and a faithful member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Her love for her Lord and Savior was evident in each Sunday School lesson she taught to the children or the fun Bible School activities she planned each summer. Penny lovingly prepared wonderful food and meals for the church fellowships and for her church families.  She was always there to help everyone and especially those in need.

“My Penny” as she was lovingly named by her grandson, was a perfect grandmother. “My Penny” loved all her grandchildren with all her heart and soul and she was so proud of each one of them. They will each remember the important lessons in life that she has taught them and most importantly they will never forget her example of showing kindness to others.

Penny’s journey through life was one of unwavering love and devotion. A path she walked hand in hand with her husband Howard. Their marriage of 58 years was an inspiring example for others to follow and a testament to the meaning of a true and happy life shared together. Blessed with a precious daughter, who is so like her mother and who Penny loved more than life, will carry on memories of her that will never be forgotten.

She was the heartbeat of her family, the friend who uplifted our spirits and the compassionate soul who enriched every life she touched. “My Penny” will be a guiding star in the night sky watching over us and we shall forever feel her love in the whisper of the wind on Sorrells Cove.

In addition to her parents, Penny was preceded in death by her beloved daughter,  Carole Anne Sorrells.

Surviving are her loving husband, Howard Sorrells of Clyde; her daughter and son-in-law, Leigh and David Jones of Clyde; her grandchildren that she adored, Jonathon Jones (Ashley) of Clyde, Maggie Jones ( Daniel Webb) of Canton, Jamison Jones and AnnieMae Jones; her sisters, Marchita Burnette (Charles Ray) of South Carolina and Nikki Stanley of Florida; a brother, Reginald Stanley of England; a half-sister, Gerry Merck of Nebraska; many nieces and nephews and a host of special friends; also Penny’s special little dog, “Willie” that she loved dearly.

A celebration of life service to honor Penny will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, June 9, 2024 at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Reverend Jeff King will be officiating. The family will be receiving friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Memorials may be made in Penny’s memory to Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 39 Robinson Road, Clyde, NC 28721.

I'm very sorry to hear of Penny's passing. I remember going to her house often growing up. It was the first place I ever had her famous chocolate gravy. I still have my cabbage patch doll she made for me too. Leigh, I'm keeping you and your family in my prayers.

To friend Howard and your family, the shocking news of Penny’s death brought deep sorrow and sadness. My heart weeps for you. The obituary is a sweet reflection of her special life. Penny has been a dear family friend for many years. She and Howard have long been a part of our extended family, attending our family reunions many times. Our families used to go camping and attended horse shows together along with their daughters, Leigh and Carole Anne. This special lady is going to be missed more than we can say. Our deepest sympathies go out to Howard and rest of the family.

I was devastated to learn of the passing of this wonderful woman who has been a dear family friend for many years. Penny and Howard have been a important part of my extended family and came to our family reunions for many years. Penny would always help to get the food arranged just right. In all my reunion videos, Penny is featured prominently and had an endearing way of poking her tongue out and laughing as the camera panned past her. We all used to go camping together at Cataloochee and went to many horse shows. Penny and I had great in-depth conversations and she was a joy to talk to. My deepest condolences go to Howard, Leigh, and the family. Penny was loved and she will be missed. Hold on to her memories; she will always be with you in them.

So many memories in such a short time. I remember first being married and stopping by your house almost every day so that my bonus kid could run to your porch and get piece of candy or fruit. I barely knew you. Fast forward to me having my first child and the love you and your church family showed was immeasurable. And so began a beautiful relationship of surrogate grandparenthood. You babysat, you had us for lunch, for dinner. You met us at the crack of dawn at ingles to get our child so that I could have my other child and you kept him for a couple days, brought him to meet his brother and then kept him extra. You kept my middle child when he was still nursing and new to a bottle. You loved my kids. Death sucks. It’s never pretty. Our only hope is Christ Jesus. We will see you again. And we will remember you always.

My deepest condolences to all of Penny's family. She will be sorely missed but has left behind a legacy of love, faith and kindness. Our family will I know always cherish the memories of unfortunately fleeting visits over the years as we were a military family always on the move but each time we had the opportunity to visit NC we always felt loved and welcomed by both Penny and Howard and their family each and every time we had the good fortune to visit and spend time with them.

My deepest sympathy to the entire family.. I only met Aunt Penny a few times but in those few times it was enough for me to love her instantly though I'm not family by blood, The Stanley family sure made me feel like family... My heart, love and support will always be with you all..
It is really hard to explain the loss of my sister. She is everything that was written in in her obituary and more. Penny was always there for me and helped in every way she could. She was an amazingly talented sister, she watched my oldest son so I could go back to school. She made my clothes for me and only said Keeta just get enough fabric so I can make something for Carol Ann. I will never forget the teepee she made for Jonathan. It was big enough for him to sleep in and she hand painted. She had a love for animals, she always had a pet of some kind. Anytime we needed to know something my husband would say call Penny she knows everything and she would always have the answer I'm going to miss being able to call her. My heart goes out to Howard and Leigh and all of her grandchildren and great grandchidren for I know they are going to miss her as much as I'm going to. The only thing that makes it possible is knowing that she's in Heaven now with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. So I know she is at peace now and I do believe angles watch over us. So we have a heavenly angel watching over us now.

Penny is my sister in law and will never forget her kindness to me and my son. She loved to cook and sew. Over the years Ihave not seen her much, but when I did we just picked up as if it were yesterday. The Lord has received another angel.

My sweet Aunt Penny. As sad as this is, I know you are having a blast with Carole Anne. That is the only thing that makes me feel good about losing you. I remember when I first met you I was seven. You were a star in the family and always remained bright! I will miss you. I think of everyone now, especially Howard and Leigh. My love to both of you at this time. May God bless us all and in every step we take from here. I will always remember you so giving and loving and there for the family!

She was a highlight of our family reunions when we were kids and then when she started planning them as we got older. Penny will be missed deeply by all of us. I’ll continue to have you Howard and your family in my prayers while you are going through this difficult time.

I remember so fondly Penny and I doing the meals for the football team on Fridays back when our son Colby played in the early 1990's. We had so much fun doing those meals! She was a sweetheart and always full of fun and laughter. When he graduated in 1993 I really missed our fun times. She was a wonderful asset to Pisgah High School and all the kids loved her. I am so sorry for your loss of such a fine person who cared for so many. Prayers for the family.
Love and prayers for the entire family
