A Caring Lady

Thelma Louise Story, 96 passed away April 23, 2024, making her the last of her generation.  She was born August 29, 1927, in Old Hickory, Tennessee to Arthur Clyde Hicks and Ida Alene (Stafford), at a time when transportation was by foot or mule. Her father moved the family between Tennessee and Michigan, wherever he was able to find work, during the Depression and World War II.  She had 5 siblings, Joseph Clyde (Lila), Dorothy Marline (Leo Holmes), Mary Ann (Charles Albert), Ruth Ellen (Robert Watson), and Rebecca Elizabeth (Ralph Moratz).

At 18, she worked in a sock factory in Nashville then found employment in a factory near Canton, Ohio. An employee, Jane Ratcliff, introduced her to her nephew Willard Ratcliff whom she married on April 5, 1947.  She was a wife and mother to her four children, Kathy Ellen, Willard Bruce, Dale Edward, and James Arthur.

When the children were mostly grown, she got her GED and started nursing school at Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio. She was unable to complete the training but trained as a nurse’s aide. She had a long career at Aultman and later in Texas where she followed her daughter and son Dale.

Late in life, she married Virgil Story in Hearne, Texas. He was very caring to her.

After Virgil died, she moved to Magnolia, Texas next door to her son Dale and his wife Patsy where she gardened and worked on her old house. She was involved in the Friendship Center and belonged to several church groups. She enjoyed being Grandma to Malinda (Lonnie Gale) and Timothy Ratcliff (Diana).

Her life was about caring for others, her siblings, her children, her parents, grandchildren, patients, the elderly, and other children.  She taught her children to treat everyone with kindness.

Her family is planning to honor her and scatter her ashes at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, pay it forward in service or donations to charity.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Story family.
