Canton – Thomas “Tom” James Ladet, a deeply loved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and a well-respected gentleman, passed away Thursday, September 17, 2020.

Tom was born April 3, 1926 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to the late Ludovic Ladet and the late Dorothy Hennage L. Phillips. He had resided in Louisiana, Florida, and Kansas before making his home in Canton in 1982.  Mr. Ladet had received his Chemical Engineering Degree from Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, and was employed with Esso / Exxon in the petroleum industry. Thomas had proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and had taught electronics to other service members. His strong faith was an important part of his life and he was a devoted and active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Canton.  Mr. Ladet had served on the church finance committee and was also a member of The Knights of Columbus. Tom was indeed a very brilliant man, his vast knowledge on every subject was remarkable and he often shared his words of wisdom with his family and his many friends.  A smile always came to Tom’s face when his family gathered for a delicious meal and those happy memories will be treasured.  He was blessed with 94 years of a full life, well-lived, and we give thanks for his loving spirit that we each will hold forever in our hearts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Joan; and his children, TJ Ladet, Shaun Ladet, and Paul Ladet.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 71 ½ years, Julia Reardon Ladet of Canton;  his children, Mary Catlette (Bill) of Collierville, TN, David Ladet (Jean) of Avondale, GA, Julie Baiardi ( Fred) of Oak Ridge, NC,  John Ladet of Las Vegas, NV, William Ladet  ( Betty Wright) of Las Vegas, NV and Beth Irvine (Darryl) of Las Vegas, NV; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren and a multitude of friends.

A funeral mass to honor the life of Thomas Ladet will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, September 28, 2020 at Immaculate Conception Church in Canton. Father Paul McNulty will be officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends from 3:00 to 4:30 pm on Sunday, September 27 at Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Canton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Ladet’s memory to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, c/o St. John Evangelist's Catholic Church 234 Church St., Waynesville, NC 28786.
