Tom F. Martin, 98, originally of Chicago, IL, and more recently of Holly Hill, FL, via Hendersonville, NC, died February 23, 2015, peacefully in his sleep at the beautiful Homestead in Haywood County. Prior to his passing, Tom lived with his youngest child, Margie Jo, who was his constant companion and caregiver since March 2012. His adoring wife of 70 years preceded him to God’s side in 2010. He is also survived by five additional children: Annette R. Zigan of Versailles, IN; Carolyn S. Dohrmann of Clarkesville, GA; Thomas D. Martin of Flat Rock, NC; Michael L. Martin of Hendersonville, NC; and Janice M. Martin of Philadelphia, PA. Tom and Mary had 10 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
Tom was born in Chicago, IL, April 15, 1916. He was the youngest of four and whose parents were each from a family of twelve. Tom spent six years in the Naval Coast Guards on the USS Wilmette before falling in love with his future beautiful bride, Mary Louise. They were wed on August 30, 1940. During his life he was a process engineer, a tool and die designer, a machine maintenance foreman at Picatinny Arsenal, and a chief inspector. He owned many businesses to include a trucking company out of Miami, FL, a small farm in Saluda, NC, and The Rainbow Motel and Tom Martin Realty, both in Hendersonville, NC.
As a life member of The Elks and a trustee for Lodge 1616, B.P.O.E., he enjoyed a good game of pool. At 98, he was still playing competing hands of Rummy! Although a builder, hobbyist, collector and entrepreneur, Tom most enjoyed Mary’s company. They were companion ballroom dancers, bridge buddies and life partners. Side by side was their favorite spot.
At his request, Tom did not want a funeral or celebration of life memorial. He has requested his cremains to be forever with Mary’s in Margie’s care. Condolences may be sent to the Martin family at PO Box 107, Canton, NC, 28716. There is a memorial page at TomandMaryMartin.WordPress.Com as well as CrawfordRay.com. Please visit and share your memories of this missed and loved couple.
