Canton- Walter “Walt” Marcellus Evans, age 90, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, June 6, 2020.

Walt was born February 2, 1930 in Kingsport, Tennessee to the late Paris Edgar Evans and the late Levis Harris Evans. He was a United States Army Veteran honorably serving his country during the Korean War.  Mr. Evans had made his home in Haywood County and retired from Bearings and Drives, Inc. in Asheville.  Walt and his late wife Margaret were also the owners and operators of The Enchanted Cottage, a gift shop located in Canton which closed in 2006 following the passing of Mrs. Evans.  Walt and Margaret were well known and loved throughout the community and both were devoted members of Beaverdam United Methodist Church.  He was an avid sports fan and he loved his University of Tennessee football, UNC -Tar Heel Basketball, and Atlanta Braves baseball. Walt was an exceptional bowler and amazed everyone by continuing to bowl until the age of 86.  He was a talented artisan and many will remember his handmade wooden clocks and the beautiful magnetic jewelry that he sold in his shop.  He also traveled to festivals and craft shows all across the Tri-State selling his handcrafted items. Walt was blessed with a full and wonderful life and we each hold forever treasured memories of him in our hearts.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret Evans; and his son, Paul Evans.

Surviving are his daughters, Terri Evans and Janice Evans of Canton, NC; his granddaughter, Amanda Norton and her husband, Zack of Spring Hills, FL; his grandson, Daniel Evans and his wife, Amanda of Waynesville, NC; a daughter-in-law, Denise Evans of Sylva, NC; and also his faithful companion until the end, his beloved dog, “Precious”.

A celebration of life service to honor Walt will be held at a later date. Mr. Evans is laid to rest beside his loving wife at Beaverdam Methodist Church Cemetery in Canton, NC.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Evans family.
