A Godly Christian Woman

On the crisp fall morning of Wednesday, October 11, 2023, a wonderful beloved lady, Wilma Gillespie Edmonds age 78,  gently and peacefully passed away surrounded by her family, those whom she cherished with all her heart and soul.

Wilma was a lady of kindness and grace. Born in Buncombe County on May 4, 1945, among the mountains of Western North Carolina. Making her home in Leicester, she grew up with values of compassion and selflessness ingrained in her spirit.

At the young age of ten, Wilma had a life-altering experience of grace. It was then that she was saved and in that sacred moment, she dedicated her life to Jesus Christ. Her joy was to be in the house of the Lord, and she was a faithfully attending member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church in Leicester. Wilma was a Godly woman and was a witness of God’s love to her family and friends.

A devoted wife, mother, mamaw, and great-mamaw, her love enveloped each of her cherished family members every single day. One of the greatest pleasures of Wilma’s life was to travel with her family and friends together. Wilma and her husband, Ray, shared a marriage that was not just wonderful but a testament of 57 years of love together. They were inseparable and where one was the other was also. In the words of Ray, “We are one.”

Wilma’s beautiful smile and her Christian spirit will remain etched in the hearts of her loved ones forever. In the warmth of her memory, they will each find peace and remember her guiding light. Wilma’s light will shine eternally.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Burgin Gillespie and Dorothy Ledbetter Gillespie; a brother, Cecil Gillespie, and sisters, Kay Gillespie and JoAnn Hawkins.

Family left to cherish her memory are, her husband, the love of her life and wonderful companion, Ray Edmonds; her daughters, Donna Justice, Deborah Wilson (Jeremy) and Teresa Sluder (Jonathan); her grandsons, Weston Justice (Makayla), Michael Justice, Russell Sluder (fiancée, Josie Buckner); great-grandchildren, Hazel Kate and Walter Justice; a brother, Conley Gillespie and a sister, Carolyn Brookshire.

A funeral service to honor the life of Wilma will be held at 3:00PM, Sunday, October 15, 2023, at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church in Leicester. Officiating will be Reverend Dewayne Brown, Reverend Stanley Surrett, Reverend Bill Brown, Reverend Jonathan Sluder and Reverend Paul Sluder. Mrs. Edmond's will lie in state at the church from 2:00PM until 3:00PM prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends Saturday evening from 6:00PM until 8:00PM at Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Canton.

Memorials may be made in Mrs. Edmonds memory to Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, 7 Mayrand Road, Leicester, NC 28748.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Edmonds family.
