Loved Her Family and Her Lord

Photo of Wilma Jean Bennett - 1942-2021

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the passing of Wilma Jean Bennett, our loving and devoted wife, momma, mamaw, great-grandma, daughter, sister, and friend to all whose lives she touched.  Born on the 4th of October in 1942, she went to be with the Lord on August 18, 2021. While we are grieving at our loss, we are rejoicing at her gain.  We can’t imagine what she is experiencing right now, but we know she is not in pain.  She’s probably either laughing or shouting… maybe both, in the presence of her Savior!

For 61 years, she was the loving and devoted wife to Kenneth Lee Bennett.  She was Momma to Kevin, Tim, Sam, Lisa and Randy - Mamaw to Hunter, Jessica, Casey, Carson, Chelsey, Carli, Caelyn, Drew, Katie, Heather, Kody, Kassie, Kamryn, Kolton, and Daniel – Great-grandma to Maverick, Jude, Nora, Ezra, Asher, Ayden, Hadley and Mason – Daughter to William (Carl) and Mary Ann (Annie) – Sister to Jewel, Betty Jo, Doyle, and Ben.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother William (Carl) and Mary Ann (Annie), sister Jewel, and sister Betty Jo.

Wilma Jean lived a full life as a devoted caretaker of her family and took on myriad side jobs to help with any “extras” needed to raise a large family.  This included treks into selling Avon, Home Interiors, and doing income taxes.  Generally, she preferred work that would keep her close to the action at home.

A phrase that describes her best would be “Other-minded.”  She was the epitome of Philippians 2:3 “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem each other better than themselves.”

She loved teaching Sunday school, talking with her family, working puzzles, a good book every now and then, or simply sitting beside the love of her life (Kenneth) holding hands.  If you asked her what the secret to a long marriage was, she would quickly say praying and reading the Bible together.  They did this nightly and inspired so many.

Most of all she loved the Lord.  Especially in her last few months, she was a prayer warrior and an inspiration to so many in seemingly hopeless situations… but she knew Hope, and she inspired Hope.

A celebration of Wilma Jean’s life will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, August 22, 2021 at Center Pigeon Baptist Church. Bishop Michael Nations will be officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Center Pigeon Baptist Church Cemetery.

Floral tributes are appreciated, or memorials may be made in memory of Wilma Bennett to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Bennett family.

Jean was one special lady, as you all know. I know she is already home now; already talking to her sisters. She is looking down at us, smiling, because she knows it just isn't our time yet. She was very dear to me, and I am proud to call her my friend.

I’m so sorry Kenneth, Kevin, Tim, Sammy, Lisa, Randy and family for your precious loss! Wilma Jean was such a special lady and always nice to everyone that crossed her path! She was a beautiful witness for the Lord and she taught her children according to Gods word and that’s the inheritance that she has left behind to all of you! I’ll never forget hanging out with Lisa when we were younger and you guys always made me feel like I was part of the family and I think your parents had a lot to do with that from the way they raised you and God truly blessed you all! My heart is breaking for you all and I know what it feels like to lose a mom and I just want you all to know I love you guys and just know I’m praying for you and if you need anything please let me know! I pray God gives you all strength and comfort during this sad time!
